HELPFUL DRIVING HINTS

If you're driving, here are some tips to assure you of an enjoyable trip.
Be sure your vehicle is equipped for cold and snow.
The folks who live and work at Killington wouldn't be without the items listed below.
It would be a good idea to follow their example.

1. Snow tires, with or without studs.
All-season tires will work unless you have to drive during a snowstorm.
Skid chains may assist then.
2. Strong car battery.
3. Winter weight oil.
4. Engine coolant and windshield washer solution suitable for below zero weather.
5. Dry gas. Cold temperatures and a higher elevation in the mountains causes moisture to condense in the gas tank. Keeping over a 1/2 tank of gas at all times will also help.
6. Windshield scraper and snow brush.

Other items you won't necessarily need but may prove helpful at times are jumper cables, a flashlight, blanket, small shovel, bag of sand, lock de-icer and an extra set of keys.

If you're bringing skis with you in your car, a locking ski rack is especially helpful. Unless you have a station wagon or hatchback, skis carried inside a car are cumbersome, may damage interior and can be dangerous if you're forced to stop quickly. Skis carried in a roof-top rack should have their tips pointed up and back. Once you arrive at the hotel, skis can be stored in the rooms or in
ski lockers at the slopes. Because of the risk of theft, we do not suggest leaving skis in your car or on the racks, even if the racks lock.

When driving in a storm, remember to slow down, and be alert. Braking hard or fast on a snowy or slippery surface will cause you to skid, so downshift into a lower gear and pump the brakes lightly only when necessary. Maintain a lower speed, and less braking will be required. When going up hill, increase speed gradually, and turn the wheel from left to right slightly to gain traction. The
roads are usually well kept, but if you push too hard on the gas even the smallest incline will cause you to spin your tires and get stuck. NEVER FLOOR IT!

Above all, if you are not confident in your driving abilities for the weather conditions, do not drive. There are various shuttles and taxi services available, so
driving while in Killington is not necessary.
